Peace Movement Aotearoa Information on Israel and Lebanon

This information as a summary to answer the questions Peace Movement Aotearoa is being asked on the conflict in Lebanon. The focus is mainly on the actions of the Israeli government, precisely because as a state they have the responsibility and obligation to adhere to international humanitarian and human rights law - and they are not. This focus does not imply any support for any act of violence by any other individual or group. The page includes: 1) details of an emergency appeal for Israel, Palestine and Lebanon; 2) contact details for Israeli and NZ government representatives; 3) details of solidarity events and protests in Auckland, Wellington and Nelson; 4) links to some of the Israeli and Jewish peace groups who are commenting on the current situation; and 5) links to other sources of information.

Sign the petition for a slave-free economy!

As New Zealanders we have laws for minimum wages, equal opportunities, anti-racism and in 1993 we ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child because we believe in basic human rights for all. But NZ does not have a law banning the sale of products that use slave labour! (Trade Aid).

Supersize My Pay Campaign

The New Zealand government has said it wants to raise the minimum wage to $12.00 per hour by the end of 2008 if "economic conditions permit." But 2008 is too late for low paid and minimum wage workers - we are already in the midst of a low wage crisis despite recent growth in the economy and record corporate profits. Unite Union and the SuperSizeMyPay.Com campaign is calling for an immediate minimum wage rise to $12.00 NOW, the abolition of youth rates, secure hours and other minimum entitlements.

UN expert urges South Africa and New Zealand to ratify ILO 169 immediately

The UN's top expert on indigenous rights has called on the governments of South Africa and New Zealand to ratify ILO Convention 169 on indigenous and tribal peoples' rights. ILO Convention 169 is the only legally binding international instrument which upholds tribal peoples' rights to the collective ownership of their lands. Here you can read the UN reports from both countries and find out how to urge the governments to ratify the convention. (Survival International, 12 June, 2006)

Urgent action for deep sea life

The deep-sea is woefully inadequately protected from destructive fishing practices such as bottom trawling. The only clear action for countries left to take now is support a global moratorium on high seas bottom trawling at the United Nations General Assembly in October. You can help protect the oceans by sending a message to the ministers of Canada, Finland, France, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Spain and the USA.

With your organisation, support the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

After more than 20 years of negotiations, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in June 2006. It is now being sent to the United Nations General Assembly for adoption at the end of this year. The Aotearoa Indigenous Rights Trust (a Maori organisation active at the UN on the Declaration) has drafted a letter to send to overseas' embassies in New Zealand and Pacific States to lobby them to prevent New Zealand and other states from amending the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples before it is voted on in the UN General Assembly at the end of this year. If you think your organisation might like to add its name to the letter, go to this website.
