Act Now! Support the Child Soldier Prevention Act of 2007 and Limit US Military Assistance to Governments Using Children as Soliders

Today, an estimated 250,000 children are serving in armed conflict in 20 countries around the world. These "child soldiers" include boys and girls, sometimes as young as eight years old, serving in government armies, government-linked militias, and armed opposition groups. Although many child soldiers are found in non-governmental armed opposition groups, the State Department reports that governments in ten countries are implicated in child soldier use. The US government provides military assistance to nine of them. (Human Rights Watch)

Act to end Discrimination Against Palestinian Arab Children in Israel's Schools

Palestinian Arab citizens of Israel make up nearly one-quarter of Israel's schoolchildren. Yet Palestinian Arab children receive an education that is inferior in nearly every respect when compared to Jewish children. Write to the Israeli Minister of Education. Contact key members of the Israeli Knesset.

An international call for action to end violence against children: establish a Special Representative to the UN Secretary-General on Violence against

Violence is a daily reality for millions of children around the world, affecting girls and boys of all ages, all social contexts, and all nationalities. In every part of their lives -their homes and families, schools, institutions, workplaces and communities - children may be beaten, sexually assaulted, tortured, and even killed. The perpetrators of this violence are often the very individuals who are responsible for protecting children - their parents, guardians, teachers, employers, the police and security forces. Violence is a global epidemic of scandalous proportions, violating every child's right to a safe and healthy environment. (CRIN).

Sign up for a GuluWalk and Be a Reason for Hope in Northern Uganda!

U.N. Under-Secretary General of Humanitarian Affairs Jan Egeland has called the situation in northern Uganda "the world's most neglected humanitarian crisis" and "one of the biggest scandals of our generation." As many as 40,000 children walk from their rural villages into the town of Gulu and other urban centres to sleep in relative safety and avoiding abduction by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) for use in the country's 20-year civil war. The plight of the children sparked the idea for GuluWalk, which has now grown into an international tool for public engagement and active global citizenship. It has also become a fundraising initiative to support children's programs in northern Uganda, which focus on education, rehabilitation and youth outreach.

Stop the Export of U.S.-Funded Abstinence-Only HIV/AIDS Programs

'Abstinence-only' programs teach that abstaining from sex until marriage is the only effective way to prevent contracting HIV through sex. They deny young people critical information about condoms and other safer sex strategies, and promote marriage as a safeguard against HIV infection. These programs do not work, they violate kids' right to complete information about HIV/AIDS and leave young people at risk of contracting HIV in marriage, particularly women and girls. But the U.S. government is exporting them all over the world as part of President Bush's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. Support Ugandan AIDS activists by adding your name to a sign-on letter to their Ministry of Health. Write to President Bush and Ambassador Randall Tobias
