- Colludo: Whodunit to the World's Poor"
-
World Development Movement (WDM). Something criminal is being done to the world's poorest countries. WDM's Colludo campaign reveals the evidence that rich country leaders are colluding to give developing countries an unfair deal. They are forcing policies such as trade liberalisation, investment deregulation and privatisation onto the poor, in return for minuscule debt relief. The Colludo campaigns calls for: * an end to the unjust International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank economic conditions attached to debt relief * the cancellation of all poor country debt under a fair, transparent and democratic process for obtaining debt relief Read the evidence. Decide. Take Action.

- Stop the debt vultures!
-
n 1999, a 'vulture fund' called Donegal International bought a debt owed by Zambia, originally worth $15 million and then valued at about $30 million, for a knock-down price of $3.3 million. Now it has sued Zambia for the full amount, plus interest and costs - a staggering total of over $55 million! On 15th February 2007, a judge in London rejected the size of Donegal's claim, after Zambia fought back in the courts. But he nevertheless ruled that under law Donegal is entitled to something from Zambia. The exact total is to be determined, but may be around $20 million. This would be half of the amount that Zambia is due to save from debt relief this year: but it desperately needs all its money to invest in teachers, doctors and infrastructure. Donegal must not take this money, and you can help. Jubilee Debt Campaign, together with Oxfam, is calling on Donegal International not to claim this money. Please add your voice to our call. Your emails really do make a difference.

Several years on, we look at the situation now, and ask you to take action to ensure progress that has been made is translated into real improvements in the lives of those being exploited. Read background information on what we know, what has been done, and what more needs to happen to rid the cocoa industry of forced labour and trafficking.

- Take Action on Vulture Funds Now: Stop Them for Good!
-
Recently the UK Royal Court of Justice in London ruled that Zambia must pay $15.4 million plus most legal costs to Donegal International, the vulture fund that had sued Zambia for more than $50 million. While the fact that Donegal was not awarded the full amount it sought is a small victory, the injustice of the result could not be more clear. Donegal, led by American investor Michael Sheehan, purchased the debt for $4 million. Donegal thus stands to make a major profit out of one of the world's most impoverished nations. This year, Zambia expected to save about $40 million thanks to debt relief fought for by Jubilee campaigners and enacted by the IMF, World Bank, and US government. Donegal will now take nearly half of that amount. This money could have been used to build schools and clinics. Enough is enough. Jubilee USA and debt campaigners around the world are working to try to stop Donegal from actually getting the money, and even more importantly, to make sure the vultures don't prey on poor countries any longer. We are working with allies in Congress who have committed to hold hearings on the practices of these vulture funds in May. A report on Democracy Now! this morning indicated that an investigation is underway into allegations of bribery against Michael Sheehan.

- Tell M&M/Mars: Make M&M's really groovy - Sell Fair Trade!
-
(GlobalExchange) Child slavery on Ivory Coast cocoa farms was recently reported by the ILO and the US State Department among others. The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) found that over 284,000 children on West African cocoa farms work in hazardous tasks. Over 66% of children on Ivory Coast cocoa farms do not attend school. What is causing these problems? Poverty, due to insufficient world cocoa prices. There is a better way: Fair Trade. Fair Trade guarantees a minimum price per pound (a living wage), prohibits abusive child labor and forced labor, requires independent monitoring, and promotes environmental sustainability. Unfortunately, none of America's biggest chocolate companies yet offer Fair Trade. Send a free fax to let the company know that you are outraged about the bitter taste of exploitation in your M&M's, and that you want them to offer Fair Trade chocolate today!
