Tell M&M/Mars: Make M&M's really groovy - Sell Fair Trade!

(GlobalExchange) Child slavery on Ivory Coast cocoa farms was recently reported by the ILO and the US State Department among others. The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) found that over 284,000 children on West African cocoa farms work in hazardous tasks. Over 66% of children on Ivory Coast cocoa farms do not attend school. What is causing these problems? Poverty, due to insufficient world cocoa prices. There is a better way: Fair Trade. Fair Trade guarantees a minimum price per pound (a living wage), prohibits abusive child labor and forced labor, requires independent monitoring, and promotes environmental sustainability. Unfortunately, none of America's biggest chocolate companies yet offer Fair Trade. Send a free fax to let the company know that you are outraged about the bitter taste of exploitation in your M&M's, and that you want them to offer Fair Trade chocolate today!

The Derailer's Guide to the WTO [PDF]

(Focus on the Global South) The Derailer's Guide to the WTO provides basic information about WTO agreements, what is on the negotiating table for Hong Kong and the remainder of the Doha Round (which will likely continue through 2006), and the main actors in these negotiations. It also offers ideas about how all those committed to social and economic justice can stalemate, or derail, this latest liberalization offensive through the WTO parading under the guise of "development."

True Cost Economics

This campaign is a fight to revolutionize economics before our planet is destroyed. A new economic paradigm - one that is open, holistic, and human scale - requires a change in thinking. The economic revolution begins with the demand that universities teach economics that incorporates ethics. At this website you can learn more, sign the True Cost Economics manifesto, and get information on how to introduce its elements into your university.

UNESCO International day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition

Come support UNESCO on the 23rd of August. The petition being handed to parliament asks for a law to make it illegal for slave-made products to be imported into NZ (UNESCO, August 2007).

World Bank Campaign Europe

On Monday 5 March over 65 non-governmental organisations from across Europe launched a new campaign to challenge the World Bank. The campaign launch coincides with the start of negotiations for further funding from rich country governments for the Bank. The NGOs backing the campaign are calling for European governments to press the Bank to accept specific reforms or to channel their funding elsewhere. The reforms are in the areas of economic policy reform and fossil fuel lending.

Write a Letter Urging the G-8 to Make the Connections Between Debt and Oil!

When the G-8 met in Scotland last year, global poverty and climate change headlined the agenda. This weekend in Russia, energy security tops the list, and last year's priorities seem forgotten. It appears the G-8 is defining energy security as promotion and expansion of oil production worldwide. This type of energy security will only: * Further increase oil dependence * Exacerbate climate change * And drive countries deeper into debt. Wherever you are, you can take action by writing a letter to your local paper, using the model letters on this website as a guide.
