Greenpeace's updated Clean Energy Guide

Greenpeace has released an updated version of it's Clean Energy Guide, which ranks New Zealand's electricity companies on their contribution to climate change, both now and in the future. The updated guide encourages New Zealand consumers to switch to a cleaner electricity supplier. Switching to a cleaner electricity supplier is easy. You can make the switch simply by ringing your current power company and telling them you want to change, or online at http://www.cleanenergyguide.org.nz. The guide ranks each company that feeds into the national grid according to its current supply and future commitment to clean, renewable energy. This edition also takes into account each company's energy efficiency programmes and whether they encourage households to generate their own renewable electricity. Our last guide helped many New Zealanders switch to cleaner electricity, and helped stop Mighty River Power's Marsden B coal-fired power station.

Help Protect China's Nu River for Future Generations

The Nu (Salween) River is one of only two undammed rivers in China and forms part of the Three Parallel Rivers World Heritage Site. The area contains over 6,000 different plant species and is believed to support over 25% of the world's and 50% of China's animal species. The Yunnan Provincial government plans to construct a series of up to thirteen dams on the Nu River. The dams will threaten the rich biodiversity of the area, affecting many rare and endangered species. If all thirteen dams are built, over 50,000 people from several ethnic minority groups will be moved from their ancestral homelands. Despite concerns about the dam impacts, the Chinese government plans to approve construction of the projects without releasing the environmental impact assessment (EIA) to the public. At this website, you can find more information and send a message to Premier Wen Jiabao conveying your concerns. (International Rivers Network, May 2006)

Help Protect Enawene Nawe Land in Brazil

The Enawene Nawe live in an area of savannah and tropical rainforest in Mato Grosso state, western Brazil. Although most of their land was officially reconised in 1996, a crucial area called the Rio Preto, where the Indians gather each year to trap and smoke fish, was left out. The area is being heavily invaded by ranchers, and in a further blow the Mato Grosso state government has announced it will build a vast complex of hydroelectric dams upriver of the Enawene Nawe's land. You can help the Enawene Nawe by joining survival international in their letter writing campaign.

Help Protect Mining Activists and Free Speech in Ecuador

Last week, heavily-armed policemen raided the home of Carlos Zorrilla, a mining activist in the Intag cloudforest region of northwestern Ecuador. For over a decade, Carlos and his organization, DECOIN, have been working to protect the biodiverse Intag region from large-scale copper mining. The US-Canadian company Ascendant Copper acquired the rights to a copper concession in Intag in 2004. TAKE ACTION! Please send a letter demanding an end to the intimidation of Ecuadorian mining activists and urge officials in Ecuador to investigate the circumstances of the police raid and the charges that have been brought against Carlos.

Help Protect People's Health in Guadalajara, Mexico!

For more than 30 years, untreated industrial effluent and sewage from the metropolis of Guadalajara has flowed into the Santiago River. In 2001, the National Water Commission (CNA) declared the Santiago River unsuitable as a source of drinking water. Nevertheless, the National Water Commission proposes building the Arcediano Dam Project to supply water to Guadalajara. Residents of Guadalajara are concerned that the water will be unsuitable for human consumption, and that the proposed treatment facilities will be inadequate for removing the toxic heavy metals and organic wastes that have accumulated in the Santiago River. Communities are demanding that a comprehensive health impact assessment is conducted before construction of the project begins, and that alternative options for water supply are considered for Guadalajara City. Support the call for a comprehensive health impact assessment by writing to Mexican authorities today.

Help save Europe's oldest lowland forest

The Białowieża Forest situated on the border of Poland and Belarus is the last remaining natural lowland forest in Europe. It is abundant in wildlife, particularly on the Polish side, and is home to lynxes, wolves as well as European bison whose history is closely related to the history of the forest's conservation. Unfortunately, the natural wealth and reputation of this unique place have not ensured its effective protection, with only 17% of the Polish area protected as a national park. If the exploitation of therest of the park continues it soon may be too late. Help save this truly special place by signing our petition demanding that the national park is extended to cover the whole area of the Białowieża Forest in Poland

How To Turn Your Boss Green

Your home is full of recycling bins and your cupboards are filled with food covered in fairtrade and organic labels. You're religious about turning off the lights whenever you leave a room and wouldn't dream of leaving the TV on standby. On the domestic front, you're as green as can be. But at work it's a different story. All that wasted paper, the unfairly traded tea and coffee, the lights left on over night, the computers blazing out heat all day long. It's not your fault - although many businesses are getting serious about sustainability, some still fail to provide recycling bins or to consider the environmental impacts of their products and services. If your employer is one of those who hasn't yet gone green, how can you make them change their ways? (Guardian Unlimited, August 30, 2006)

International Public Campaign for the adoption of a Global Convention on the Right to Water

With one third of the population of the world suffering from lack of adequate drinking water and/or sanitation, it is clear that the realisation of the universal right to Water for Life is far from complete at the grass roots level. Citizens around the world are calling for a Global Convention on the Right to Water which is legally binding, enforceable and universally accepted, to fully acknowledge the Right to Water for Life and clarify the responsibilities of state parties to respect, protect and fulfil this essential right. But to date, this Global Convention on the Right to Water does not exist. We, Concerned Citizens and Individuals appeal to politicians to launch official negotiations to establish an enforceable Global Convention on the Right to Water. Sign up to support the convention here.

Let the Romanian Government Know: Communities Have the Right to Say No!

For five years, local communities have led a growing opposition to the proposed Rosia Montana gold mine in the Apuseni mountains of west central Romania. If built, Rosia Montana would become Europe's largest open-pit gold mine. It would destroy numerous mountains, churches, farms, and unique archeological sites. Even worse, local residents could be forcibly removed from their homes and farms in order to make way for the mine. Very soon, the Romanian government will decide whether to grant a permit to Gabriel Resources, the company proposing the mine. Act Now! Tell the Romanian government to protect local communities and deny the permit for the Rosia Montana gold mine proposal.

Mining activists need your help

In recent months, several members of the Peruvian organization GRUFIDES, including its president, Father Marco Arana, and its executive director, Dr. Mirtha Vasquez Chuquilin, have been targeted with death threats, defamation, and surveillance at home and at work. GRUFIDES (El Grupo de Formacion e Intervencion para el Desarrollo Sostenible) is a human rights and environmental organization that works with communities impacted by mining in the Cajamarca region of northern Peru - home to Newmont Mining's massive Yanacocha mine. There is strong opposition to the mine's expansion. Residents have held several large protests to voice their concerns about the mine's impact on the environment and local water resources. Protect Mangroves and Shark Habitat / The Bahamas

Mangrove forests provide the best protection for life and property when hurricanes and tidal waves strike. While Indonesia plans to spend nearly $44 million for mangrove restoration along its wave-swept shores, people in the hurricane-prone Bahamas are stunned by a recent government decision to permit a developer to destroy Bimini island's protective mangrove ecosystem and replace it with a tourist resort. Use this website to write a polite letter to the Prime Minister of the Bahamas to tell him about your concerns for this developmet.

Protect Paraguay's forest for future generations

The Upper Parana Atlantic Forest in Paraguay is one of the world's most ecologically important regions, containing plant and animal species found nowhere else on earth. The contribution of this ecosystem to people's welfare, both locally and regionally, is fundamental. Congratulate the Government of Paraguay for its efforts in decreasing the rate of deforestation in the Upper Parana Atlantic Forest by more than 85% in the last two years through implementation of the Zero Deforestation Law, and urge it to withstand the pressure of the farming lobby and loggers to extend the Zero Deforestation Law when it expires at the end of 2006.
