- Save the Amazon's Madeira River!
-
The Amazon is under threat. The Brazilian government is planning to build two massive dams on one of the Amazon's most important tributaries, the Madeira River. The projects would push many species to the brink of extinction, and would affect the land and livelihoods of thousands of river bank dwellers and indigenous people. But it is not too late. With your help we can show the Brazilian government that the rivers of Amazonia are worth protecting. Write to the Brazilian Environment Minister and the Mines and Energy Minister telling them the Madeira is too important a treasure to destroy.

- Save the Dugong in Okinawa
-
The island of Okinawa has been called the "Galapagos of the East" because of the precious bio-diversity it supports, but it also known as "the island of the base" because U.S. military bases occupy over 18% of the landmass of Okinawa. Henoko is located in the northeastern part of the island and has one of the last healthy coral reefs in Okinawa. The beautiful reef is home to Japan's last remaining population of critically endangered dugong, as well as other marine mammals and sea turtles. The United Nations Environment Programme has released a report calling for the creation of a marine reserve to protect the dugong. Rather than saving the dugong by protecting their home, the government of Japan is instead trying to build an airbase for the U.S. Marine Corps by land-filling the coral reef with Japanese taxpayers money. The plan to build a 2,600-meter runway complete with hangers, control towers and fuel storage on an offshore reef is a throwback to an earlier period of disrespect for the environmental value of ocean eco-systems. You can add your voice by writing emails to the Japanese and the U.S. governments.

- Save the Remaining Mangrove Forest in the Niger Delta from Shell
-
Posted May 13, 2003 by Mangrove Action Project. Alert From Niger Delta Project for Environment, Human Rights and Development (NDPEHRD). The hitherto rich ecosystem of the Oloma people is dying. A serious and grievous wound is being inflicted on its environment and people. In October 2002, as part of Shell's hook-up project -- connecting oil wells from one well to another, and onward transfer of crude oil to the Bonny terminal -- the pipeline construction activities involve seismic line/route cutting, excavation and canalization as well as transportation of human and material resources through large expanse of mangrove forests, sacred groves, human and fishing settlements. Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC) ignored mounting community agitation against the environmentally damaging project and laid pipeline from Epelema and Coconut Estate (both nearby communities to Oloma). The pipeline from these communities is to connect that of Oloma flow station in the Oloma community.

- SAVE THE SAOLA!
-
the saola, a rare animal discovered just 15 years ago by a team of scientists from WWF and the Vietnamese Ministry of Forestry. It was the first large mammal discovered anywhere in the world since 1936 and scientists are still trying to figure out whether it is a goat, antelope or cow species. Only 11 saola have ever been recorded alive by scientists and fewer than 250 are estimated to exist today.

- Send an email and urge Peru to take immediate measures to conserve and sustainably manage mahogany
-
The Peruvian rain forest is one of the world's most biologically rich and diverse regions and provides habitat for highly threatened wildlife such as the jaguar, harpy eagle, and giant river otter. Unfortunately, these creatures and their habitats are at risk from the unsustainable harvesting of timber, particularly of big-leaf mahogany, a threatened species so valuable that it can lead to the destruction of large forest areas. Peru is the world's largest exporter of big-leaf mahogany, with over 90% going to the North American market.

- Stop Biwater's attempt to sue one of the poorest countries in the world
-
Early in 2006 the Tanzanian Government spectacularly terminated a water privatisation contract with Biwater just two years into a ten year contract on the grounds that they had failed to improve water supplies. Now Biwater has launched a legal action at the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes at the World Bank, on the grounds that the Government of Tanzania expropriated City Water's resources and failed to grant the company "fair and equitable treatment." This action will take years to resolve. This legal action will take up considerable resources of the Tanzanian Government which it can ill afford. Email Biwater now and demand that they withdraw from this legal action against the Tanzanian government.

- Stop Iceland's Whale Killers
-
he fisheries agency of Iceland has announced an outrageous scheme to begin killing whales in the North Atlantic this month. Ostensibly part of a so-called "scientific study" of minke whales, this scheme in fact is intended to lead to a renewal of commercial whaling by Iceland. Iceland proposes to start the massive killing with 38 minke whales in August and September. Urge the government of Iceland to: 1. Halt all plans to kill whales for scientific research and for commercial purposes, and 2. Withdraw their formal objection to the International Whaling Commission's moratorium on commercial whaling.

- Stop Oil Development in National Park / Belize
-
Five oil companies already have been licensed to conduct seismic explorations, both on land and off shore. Belize's 90 "protected" areas are fair game. Not even the National Parks are spared the invasion of heavy machinery and shattering blasts of dynamite. The first showdown on Parks vs. Oil is underway in southern Belize, where Texas-based US Capital Energy is licensed to conduct oil explorations including the 41,000-acre Sarstoon Temash National Park. Who is fighting to protect the Park? Belize's poorest and most disenfranchised people: the Maya and Garifuna communities that depend on the Park's resources for their traditional livelihoods. Please send a polite letter to Belize's Prime Minister with copies to the Ministers of Tourism and Natural Resources.

- Stop the Icelandic government and arms manufacturer Alcoa destroying Europe's largest remaining wilderness for an aluminium plant!
-
The Icelandic highlands are the last great expanse of true wilderness left in Western Europe. Now the country's hydroelectric potential has been targeted by multinational corporations, who intend to establish large-scale heavy industry in these hitherto pristine hinterlands. A series of gigantic dams is already under construction at Kárahnjúkar in the eastern highlands of Iceland. These dams are designated solely to generate energy for one massive ALCOA aluminium smelter to be built by war-profiteers Bechtel in the beautiful fjord of Reydarfjördur, and due to be operational in 2007. The national grid will not derive a single kilowatt from it for domestic use. The natural habitat of many rare and endangered plants and animals will be submerged, lost, destroyed. Support the campaign at this website.

- Stop World Bank Funding for Bujagali Dam / Uganda
-
Please send a polite letter to the president of the World Bank Group and to the CEO of Eskom Enterprises, the corporation that is most likely to partner with the World Bank in the Bujagali dam project. Express your concern that the World Bank's Bujugali Dam project will destroy Bujagali Falls, a natural wonder, and the growing tourism industry that it supports. The dam will also provide electricity at such high cost that most Ugandans will not be able to afford it.

- Support Indigenous Opposition to Gold Mine / Guatemala
-
In the Central American country of Guatemala which recently emerged from decades of devastating civil war, indigenous peoples are now facing another assault on their lands and their rights. The threat comes from powerful multinational mining companies, backed by the Guatemalan government and the World Bank. In the last five years, the Guatemalan government has granted over 250 mining concessions, covering roughly ten percent of the country. Ninety percent of this land is occupied by indigenous peoples, who are demanding immediate cancellation of the mining permits. Guatemalan human rights and environmental organizations charge that the government did not carry out a legitimate consultation process with indigenous populations before granting mining concessions on their lands. Support their campaign by writing a letter here.

- Support Indigenous Peoples vs. Coal Mines in Venezuela
-
The quarter million indigenous people of Venezuela's Sierra have already experienced environmental devastation, disease and social upheaval since two enormous open pit coal mines began operations in 1987. They are united in opposing the construction of three new mines and the expansion of one existing mine within their territories. The projects, which would quadruple Venezuela's coal production, would be joint ventures between the Venezuelan state and mining companies from the US, Ireland, Brazil, Australia, Chile, Japan and elsewhere, and would pollute water and damage biological resources. Please support their struggle by writing to the President and the Minister of the Environment. A model letter is available here.

- Take a stand against the loss of our precious forests and pledge to buy good wood!
-
Forests are amazing storehouses of biological diversity, housing over two-thirds of all known terrestrial species. Yet each year around 13 million hectares of natural forest are lost. That's 25 hectares every minute, the equivalent of 36 football fields. But you can help stop this. Businesses will ultimately listen to their customers. If you stop buying timber that comes from forests that are badly managed, or even perhaps that has been illegally produced, then the suppliers of this timber will have no choice but to change as well. Make sure that any timber products you buy carry the FSC label.
