Defend UNICEF's mission to defend children

The People's Health Movement and its members work with UNICEF, the World Health Organization and other United Nations' agencies. Our members and constituent organizations were so alarmed to hear of the appointment of Ms. Ann Veneman as the next Executive Director of UNICEF that we have written and are distributing this Letter of Concern calling for a rethinking of both the appointment and the appointment process.

Sack Wolfowitz!

The battle for the Presidency of the World Bank is coming to a climax, and it's a replay of the Iraq war: George Bush and Paul Wolfowitz vs the World. The world is on the verge of winning this time -- and we can help tip the balance. Monday, during his testimony before the Bank's Board of Directors, Wolfowitz made it clear that he has no intention of stepping down, and he has the full backing of President Bush. The decision now rests in the hands of the Board-let's remind them that the world wants Wolfowitz out! (Avaaz,May 2007)

Simultaneous Policy: Simpol

Simultaneous Policy (SP) measures are designed to be implemented by multiple national governments at exactly the same time. In this way, no one nation is put at a competitive disadvantage against the others. Simpol is a participatory international political movement, which is working to develop these cooperative, non-competitive policies. At the same time, it is working to develop the mechanics of cooperation between national parliaments that will enable these polices to be implemented. Citizens who "adopt" the Simpol system, are asked to vote in preference for parliamentary candidates, who have pledged to implement Simultaneous Policy measures once there exist sufficient SP pledged members of sufficient other national parliaments to ensure effective international implementation.

World Bank Campaign Europe

On Monday 5 March over 65 non-governmental organisations from across Europe launched a new campaign to challenge the World Bank. The campaign launch coincides with the start of negotiations for further funding from rich country governments for the Bank. The NGOs backing the campaign are calling for European governments to press the Bank to accept specific reforms or to channel their funding elsewhere. The reforms are in the areas of economic policy reform and fossil fuel lending.
