Email the CEO of pharmaceutical giant Novartis

Vital medicines are priced out of the reach of poor people. This is in violation of the promises made five years ago by the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to make life-saving medicines available and affordable to all. As a result, millions of poor people in developing countries are dying because they can't afford the medicines they so desperately need. Global drug company, Novartis, must stop denying India the right to produce cheaper medicines for poor people worldwide!

Dirty aid, dirty water: Take action for Sierra Leone

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Africa has been awarded a major aid contract by the UK government. The company has been contracted to advise the Sierra Leonean government on the privatisation of 24 state-owned companies, including the public water company in Freetown, the capital city. The water utility in Freetown needs urgent reform. But before any such reform can take place there must be a full and meaningful consultation process, which looks at all options, including that of keeping water in public hands. Based on PWC Africa's water privatisation track record and statements made by the company and its employees, PwC Africa appears to have an ideological attachment to water privatisation and therefore should not be relied upon to run a full, meaningful and even-handed consultation process. Email PwC Africa now and demand that they withdraw from this contract unless the UK government drops the water component.

Expose the Reality Behind Bottled Water

Coke, Nestlé and Pepsi are misleading consumers into believing that bottled water is better for you than tap water--but the fact is that bottled water is actually less regulated! These corporations have spent tens of thousands of dollars to convince us that bottled water is cleaner, healthier and safer than tap water. So, as these corporations profit off our water, they are undermining support for our public water supplies, which could pave the way for corporate privatization of our public water systems. Tell Coke, Nestlé and Pepsi to stop misleading promotion of their bottled water brands and to stop interfering in policies that protect our water.

Help Protect People's Health in Guadalajara, Mexico!

For more than 30 years, untreated industrial effluent and sewage from the metropolis of Guadalajara has flowed into the Santiago River. In 2001, the National Water Commission (CNA) declared the Santiago River unsuitable as a source of drinking water. Nevertheless, the National Water Commission proposes building the Arcediano Dam Project to supply water to Guadalajara. Residents of Guadalajara are concerned that the water will be unsuitable for human consumption, and that the proposed treatment facilities will be inadequate for removing the toxic heavy metals and organic wastes that have accumulated in the Santiago River. Communities are demanding that a comprehensive health impact assessment is conducted before construction of the project begins, and that alternative options for water supply are considered for Guadalajara City. Support the call for a comprehensive health impact assessment by writing to Mexican authorities today.

Stop Biwater's attempt to sue one of the poorest countries in the world

Early in 2006 the Tanzanian Government spectacularly terminated a water privatisation contract with Biwater just two years into a ten year contract on the grounds that they had failed to improve water supplies. Now Biwater has launched a legal action at the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes at the World Bank, on the grounds that the Government of Tanzania expropriated City Water's resources and failed to grant the company "fair and equitable treatment." This action will take years to resolve. This legal action will take up considerable resources of the Tanzanian Government which it can ill afford. Email Biwater now and demand that they withdraw from this legal action against the Tanzanian government.

Stop the Export of U.S.-Funded Abstinence-Only HIV/AIDS Programs

'Abstinence-only' programs teach that abstaining from sex until marriage is the only effective way to prevent contracting HIV through sex. They deny young people critical information about condoms and other safer sex strategies, and promote marriage as a safeguard against HIV infection. These programs do not work, they violate kids' right to complete information about HIV/AIDS and leave young people at risk of contracting HIV in marriage, particularly women and girls. But the U.S. government is exporting them all over the world as part of President Bush's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. Support Ugandan AIDS activists by adding your name to a sign-on letter to their Ministry of Health. Write to President Bush and Ambassador Randall Tobias

Support Indigenous Opposition to Gold Mine / Guatemala

In the Central American country of Guatemala which recently emerged from decades of devastating civil war, indigenous peoples are now facing another assault on their lands and their rights. The threat comes from powerful multinational mining companies, backed by the Guatemalan government and the World Bank. In the last five years, the Guatemalan government has granted over 250 mining concessions, covering roughly ten percent of the country. Ninety percent of this land is occupied by indigenous peoples, who are demanding immediate cancellation of the mining permits. Guatemalan human rights and environmental organizations charge that the government did not carry out a legitimate consultation process with indigenous populations before granting mining concessions on their lands. Support their campaign by writing a letter here.

Tell Coke to Listen to the People & Stop Draining Their Water!

If current trends continue, two-thirds of the world's population will not have enough water by 2025. In their quest for profits, corporations like Coca-Cola add significantly to the problem. Coke is expanding aggressively into the bottled water industry. Through water depletion, pollution, and price gouging, Coke's practices threaten water supplies around the world. This is the reality in India where Coke has drained so much water that at least five communities face severe water shortages and health problems. Corporate Accountability International is challenging Coke to stop stealing water from local communities.
