- Sign the pledge on Internet freedom!
-
in November 2006, governments and companies from all over the world will attend a UN conference to discuss the future of the Internet. You can help us send a clear message to them that people everywhere believe the Internet should be a force for political freedom, not repression. People have the right to seek and receive information and to express their peaceful beliefs online without fear or interference. Governments should stop the unwarranted restriction of freedom of expression on the Internet, as should companies who help them do so. We will present the total number at the conference. The more people who sign the online petition, the louder our voice. Please read and sign the pledge.

- Stop the Export of U.S.-Funded Abstinence-Only HIV/AIDS Programs
-
'Abstinence-only' programs teach that abstaining from sex until marriage is the only effective way to prevent contracting HIV through sex. They deny young people critical information about condoms and other safer sex strategies, and promote marriage as a safeguard against HIV infection. These programs do not work, they violate kids' right to complete information about HIV/AIDS and leave young people at risk of contracting HIV in marriage, particularly women and girls. But the U.S. government is exporting them all over the world as part of President Bush's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. Support Ugandan AIDS activists by adding your name to a sign-on letter to their Ministry of Health. Write to President Bush and Ambassador Randall Tobias

- Take action to stop secret CIA detention!
-
The US government has constructed a wide-ranging detention system for terrorism suspects and others it considers to be implicated in the "war on terror". Many suspects are subjected to "rendition" followed by detention in acknowledged or secret US detention facilities outside the USA, or foreign-controlled facilities under US direction. All of these practices violate international law (Amnesty International).

- Take Action; Brazil's caveirão
-
The caveirão, literally meaning "big skull", is a military-style assault vehicle, with heavy armoury, a turret, and firing positions running along its body. Used to police Rio de Janeiro's favelas (slums), it is known to storm into communities, firing at random, it's loudspeakers blaring out: "Children, get out of the street. There's going to be a shootout." Between May and September 2005, 11 people were killed in caveirão-led operations. The caveirão is part of a pattern of confrontational and intimidating policing. It targets socially excluded communities, increasing violence and criminalizing poverty in Rio. Take action by going to this website to watch the video and write to the Governor of Rio de Janeiro, demanding an end to excessive use of force and urging him to implement human rights-based policing to ensure the effective protection of the residents of Rio's favelas. - The Tibetan Refugee Crisis: Keeping a Weather Eye
-
Tibetan refugees rely on international conventions that safeguard their pursuit of religious freedom and human rights. Most leave Tibet to reach asylum in either Nepal or eventually India, where they can be near their spiritual leader the Dalai Lama. Having long provided a doorway to freedom for the Tibetans, Nepal's recent actions show such neighborliness is not assured. Read more about this and send a letter to Nepalese officials urging their continued humanitarianism (Ethical Traveler).
