Urgent Appeal to Save Iraq's Academics

A little known aspect of the tragedy engulfing Iraq is the systematic liquidation of the country's academics. Thousands have been assasinated or disappeared, with many more fleeing for their lives, and educational institutions lie in ruins. As an occupying power, and under international humanitarian law, final responsibility for protecting Iraqi citizens, including academics, lies with the United States. Sign this petition to support academics.

West Papua UN Review Petition

Appalled by the ongoing suffering of the people of West Papua, we join a growing list of international parliamentarians and non-governmental organizations, and call on you as United Nations Secretary General to initiate a review of the UN's conduct in relation to the "Act of 'Free' Choice" in West Papua, 1968-69. In 1969, instead of a proper independence referendum, 1,022 West Papuans were rounded up and forced to declare - unanimously and in public - their "wish" to integrate West Papua into the Republic of Indonesia, then ruled by the brutal dictator Suharto. The population at the time was estimated at some 800,000 people, so a fraction of one percent of the people took part. The Act has been widely dismissed as a farce, yet no action has been taken to redress the injustice to date.

Western Sahara: 30 Years is Enough

On 31 October 1975, Morocco and Mauritania invaded Western Sahara as Spain (the former colonial power) looked on. The Saharawi people were expelled from their homes by force, including the use of napalm. Most fled to the Algerian desert. Mauritania withdrew its claim to Western Sahara in 1979 and left. But Morocco stayed. The Saharawi people declared their own Republic in exile, which is now recognised by 60 other states. Yet the world still refuses to uphold international law and bring the Occupation to an end. This is War on Want's campaign to help the Saharawi get their homes back. The website includes background information, links, and ways to take action.

Wings of Peace - No more Hiroshima, Nagasaki. Stop Rokkasho

Sixty years after atomic bombs devastated the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, help Greenpeace rid the world of nuclear weapons forever - with balloons. The world's leaders are meeting in September for a UN summit. Use the form available on this webpage to tell them we do not want another city to suffer the fate of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Help our leaders understand that clouds of balloons over our cities look a lot better than mushroom ones. Your message will be printed on a feather-shaped card and put on wings of dove balloons. Dove balloons will be flown on August 5th at 8 AM, in front of the Atomic Bomb Dome in Hiroshima city to commemorate the 60th anniversary. Your messages will also be sent to Prime Minister of Japan, Koizumi Junichiro and Governor of Aomori prefecture, Mimura Shingo.

Write letters to Sudanese MPs: Protect Darfur

In May 2006, the Sudanese Government and one rebel faction signed a Peace Agreement. But violence has actually increased; in the past four months alone over 80,000 more people in Darfur have been displaced, sometimes for the second or third time. The people of Darfur are asking for safety in the camps, security to allow them to return home and the disarmament of the Janjawid. An effective peacekeeping force which protects civilians can start to provide this safety. As the next session of the National Assembly begins we are singling out the Parliamentary Committees for Peace and Reconciliation and for Human Rights and asking them, with an international voice, to use their positions as decision makers to make a change.
